The table olive branch is one of the outward-facing branches of the Greek economy. Of the export destinations, the most important is the USA (34%), followed by the EU countries. In international markets, Greek table olive processing and standardization companies face intense competition, which can be countered by diversifying their products, both by promoting their specific properties related to security and authenticity as well as appropriate promotional campaigns.
Based on the above, the results of the project provide the tools for medium-long-term diversification of the production and marketing strategy of table olives which results in a significant strengthening of their competitiveness and therefore their sales both in the domestic and international markets. In particular, the results of the project will allow and facilitate the increase of existing shares as well as the entry of their products into new ‘quality’ markets abroad which require certified products, as a result of the increased sensitivity of the consumer public in matters of authenticity and food safety. In these markets the selling prices of the products are significantly higher (10-15%) than similar products which lack the corresponding certification.
A significant benefit will also result from the reduction of the unfair competition faced by specific olive products in the domestic market from correspondingly cheaper, sub-par quality products, due to the lack of effective controls and reliable methodology for identifying both the varieties and the geographical origin. It should also not be underestimated that the existence of a reliable and scientifically based methodology for checking the authenticity of agricultural products will be an important and powerful tool in the fight against “Hellenizations” with obvious significant benefits for agricultural production both locally and internationally. national level.
